How Does a Discovery Dive in San Cristóbal Work? Everything You Need to Know Before You Go

by | Aug 25, 2026

If you’re thinking about doing a Discovery Dive in the Galapagos, but you’ve never scuba dived before, it’s completely normal to have questions. Do I need a license? Do I need to know how to swim? What happens if water gets into my mask? What if I get scared breathing underwater?

I had exactly those questions before trying it myself.

The first time I put on the mask and felt the weight of the tank on my back for the Discovery Dive, I got incredibly nervous. But everything changes in a second, as soon as you get into the water.

And that’s exactly what makes a Discovery Dive so great: you can experience scuba diving for the first time without being certified, accompanied by an instructor and learning only what you need to enjoy the dive.

What Is a Discovery Dive? 🤿

A Discovery Dive, also known as Discover Scuba Diving, is an introductory experience for people who want to try scuba diving without having previously completed a certification course.

You don’t need to be a certified diver or have any previous experience with scuba equipment. Before getting into the water, your instructor explains how to use the equipment, breathe through the regulator, and communicate using basic hand signals.

In my case, everything started really calmly on the shore, where my instructor explained in just two minutes how to breathe through my mouth, how to clear my mask if water got inside, and four basic hand signals to communicate.

The goal isn’t to turn you into a certified diver in one experience, but to give you your first introduction to the underwater world in a controlled environment.

Do You Need a License to Do a Discovery Dive in the Galapagos? 🌊

You don’t need a scuba diving license to do a Discovery Dive.

This is one of the biggest advantages for people visiting the Galapagos who have never tried scuba diving before.

You don’t need:

  • An Open Water certification.
  • Previous diving experience.
  • Previous dives.
  • Technical scuba diving knowledge.

There is one important difference, though: a Discovery Dive does not certify you as a diver. It’s a supervised experience, and if you later want to dive independently, you’ll need to complete a certification course such as Open Water Diver.

That’s why it’s a great option if you simply want to find out whether scuba diving is for you before investing time in a full certification course.

How Does a Discovery Dive Work in San Cristóbal? 🐢

The process is quite simple and designed to help someone who has never dived before adapt gradually.

First, you receive an explanation of the equipment and basic safety rules. Then you learn how to breathe through the regulator, clear your mask if water gets inside, and use a few hand signals to communicate with your instructor.

Then comes the part that probably causes the most nerves: putting on all the equipment and getting into the water.

That’s exactly what happened to me. At first, having the tank on your back makes everything seem more complicated than it really is. But once you’re in the water, you start noticing that the equipment doesn’t feel nearly as heavy.

After a few minutes, something incredible happens: you start floating in complete weightlessness.

And that’s when the fear starts to disappear.

Where Can You Do a Discovery Dive in San Cristóbal? 📍

San Cristóbal is an excellent place to try scuba diving in the Galapagos because there are different sites and conditions that can work well for a first experience, depending on the sea conditions and the operator’s plan.

In San Cristóbal, you start in really calm and clear areas like Tijeretas and Carawa, so you lose your fear almost instantly.

For someone who has never breathed underwater before, starting somewhere calm with good visibility makes a huge difference. You’re not trying to control everything at once while dealing with difficult conditions.

The exact dive site can change depending on the conditions that day, so the instructor will always determine the best option for the activity.

What Animals Can You See During a Discovery Dive in the Galapagos? 🦭

This is where doing a Discovery Dive in the Galapagos becomes especially exciting.

You’re not simply learning to dive in a swimming pool. You’re entering one of the most famous marine ecosystems on the planet.

Before you know it, you’re floating in complete weightlessness while sea lions come over to do little flips right next to you, with turtles and fish swimming directly below you.

Sea lions are probably one of the encounters that surprises first-time divers the most in San Cristóbal. They’re fast, curious, and can get incredibly close.

Depending on the location and conditions, you may also encounter sea turtles, different species of fish, rays, and other marine life.

Of course, no operator can guarantee which animals you’ll see because you’re observing wild animals. But that’s exactly what makes every dive different.

How Deep Is a Discovery Dive? 🤿

You don’t need to go deep to enjoy your first diving experience.

Discover Scuba Diving programs are designed with depth limits appropriate for beginners. The initial practice takes place in shallow water, and depending on the program, the open-water dive can reach greater depths within the limits established for this type of experience.

The important thing is that you don’t have anything to prove.

If it’s your first time, the goal isn’t to go as deep as possible. It’s to learn how to breathe, control your movements, and enjoy the environment.

And trust me: when you have a sea lion swimming right in front of you, depth is no longer the most important thing.

Is It Scary to Do a Discovery Dive for the First Time? 😬

Yes, it can be scary.

And I think it’s better to be honest about that than to make the experience sound completely nerve-free.

When you’ve never scuba dived before, your brain is used to one very simple rule: you don’t breathe underwater.

Suddenly, you have a regulator in your mouth and someone tells you to take a breath.

It’s normal to feel strange.

But once you take those first breaths and realize that the equipment works, you start to relax. Then you focus on following your instructor, looking around, and enjoying the experience.

You genuinely forget about that initial scare, and you’re left with an incredible memory that lasts a lifetime.

And that’s probably the best part of a Discovery Dive: getting past that initial fear and discovering that you’re capable of doing something that once seemed impossible.

Discovery Dive vs. Open Water: Which One Should You Choose? 🏊

The difference is pretty straightforward.

A Discovery Dive is an experience designed to let you try scuba diving. You don’t need certification, and you complete the activity under professional supervision.

An Open Water Diver course, on the other hand, is a full certification course that prepares you to dive independently within the limits of your training.

So, if you’re on vacation in San Cristóbal and simply want to find out what scuba diving feels like, a Discovery Dive is an excellent option.

If you get hooked after the experience — which can easily happen — you can then consider getting your Open Water certification.

Is a Discovery Dive in San Cristóbal Worth It? 🌴

For me, definitely.

Especially if you’ve wanted to try scuba diving for a while but never took the plunge because you thought you needed experience, a license, or special knowledge.

You don’t need any of that to get started.

You just need to be willing to learn a few things, listen to your instructor, and get past those first few minutes of nerves.

Because that’s the funny thing about a Discovery Dive in San Cristóbal.

You start out worrying about the tank, the mask, and whether you’ll actually be able to breathe underwater.

And just a few minutes later, you’re floating weightlessly, surrounded by fish, watching turtles, with sea lions doing flips right next to you.

That’s when you realize those initial nerves were completely worth it.
