Highland Tour vs. 360 Tour in San Cristobal: Which One Should You Choose for Your Trip?

by | Sep 24, 2026

If you’re looking for things to do in San Cristobal, you’ll probably come across two very different options: the San Cristobal Highland Tour and the 360 Tour.

If you ask me, honestly, these two tours are completely different worlds, and it 100% depends on what you’re looking for at that moment. One is much more focused on the ocean and adrenaline, while the other lets you enjoy the island’s landscapes and wildlife on land.

San Cristobal Highland Tour: A Completely Different Experience 🌿

The San Cristobal Highland Tour is one of those excursions that lets you discover a different side of the Galapagos Islands. The route usually combines El Junco Lagoon, the giant tortoise conservation area, and Puerto Chino.

For me, the Highland Tour has a completely different vibe, perfect when you want to slow things down. You don’t have to spend the entire day out at sea, and you can take your time enjoying the island’s landscapes.

El Junco Lagoon: Walking Through Mist and Nature 🌫️

One of the most unique places along the route is El Junco Lagoon, a volcanic lagoon located in the highlands of San Cristobal.

The environment feels completely different from the coast. The vegetation, mist, and birds create a very special atmosphere, especially if you’re into landscape photography.

For me, that sense of calm is one of the biggest attractions of the Highland Tour.

Giant Tortoises of San Cristobal 🐢

Another main stop is the giant tortoise conservation area, where you can get a closer look at one of the most iconic species in the Galapagos Islands.

The pace changes here too. You can take your time watching the tortoises and learning about their environment without feeling like you’re rushing from one activity to the next.

As I mentioned before, it’s an experience to enjoy without rushing, which is something I really appreciate after several days of tours and activities.

Puerto Chino: The Perfect Way to End the Highland Tour 🏖️

After El Junco and the tortoises, the route usually continues to Puerto Chino, one of the most beautiful beaches in San Cristobal.

The landscape changes once again: light-colored sand, the ocean, and volcanic rock formations. For me, it’s the perfect place to end the afternoon relaxing on Puerto Chino Beach after exploring the highlands.

And that contrast is exactly what makes this tour special.

360 Tour San Cristobal: When You Want Ocean and Adrenaline 🌊

The 360 Tour is a completely different story. It’s a full day on a boat going around the island, combining navigation, beaches, and different snorkeling spots.

If you ask me what this tour represents, I’d say it’s pure ocean adrenaline. It’s the option I’d choose if you arrive in San Cristobal wanting to spend the day on the water and look for encounters with marine wildlife.

Kicker Rock and Snorkeling 🦈

One of the biggest highlights of the 360 Tour is the chance to visit places like Kicker Rock, where conditions may allow you to encounter sharks, rays, turtles, and different species of fish.

Other spots such as Sardina Bay can also be part of the itinerary, depending on the route and conditions on the day.

If the ocean is your priority, it’s hard to compare this experience with the Highland Tour because you’re simply looking for completely different things.

The Less-Talked-About Side of the 360 Tour ☀️

There is one thing I would definitely keep in mind before choosing it.

The 360 Tour can end up being a very tiring day with a lot of sun exposure. You’re out for many hours, traveling by boat and doing activities at different locations.

For someone who wants to make the most of every hour, that can be exactly what they’re looking for. But if you’ve already had several intense days, you might prefer something more relaxed.

Which Tour Should You Choose If You Like Photography? 📸

It really depends on the kind of photography you enjoy.

If you’re looking for landscapes, mist, vegetation, giant tortoises, and land-based photography, the Highland Tour makes a lot of sense. El Junco and Puerto Chino offer completely different settings within the same excursion.

If you’d rather photograph marine wildlife, beaches, and coastal landscapes from a boat, then the 360 Tour offers a completely different set of opportunities.

What Should You Do If You Want to Go Diving in San Cristobal? 🤿

If you’re also planning to go diving during your trip, the Highland Tour can be a great way to experience the island on land first.

You can visit El Junco, see the giant tortoises, and finish at Puerto Chino before dedicating your following days to the underwater world.

Personally, I like the idea of combining nature on land before getting underwater to dive, because that way your entire trip doesn’t end up revolving around the ocean.

Highland Tour vs. 360 Tour Based on Your Travel Style 🧭

If You Want Ocean and Marine Wildlife 🌊

The 360 Tour makes more sense if your priority is boating, snorkeling, and looking for encounters with marine wildlife.

If You Want a More Relaxed Experience 🌿

The Highland Tour has a much slower pace, especially if you enjoy walking, taking in landscapes, and spending time around land-based wildlife.

If You Like Photography 📸

For landscape photography, the Highland Tour makes a lot of sense. For marine and coastal photography, the 360 Tour offers a completely different type of scenery.

If You Don’t Have Much Time ⏱️

Here my criteria are pretty simple: if you don’t have much time and you’re coming to San Cristobal wanting the ocean, go for the 360 Tour.

On the other hand, if you’re already planning other marine activities and want to experience a different side of San Cristobal, the Highland Tour can complement your trip much better.

So, Highland Tour or 360 Tour in San Cristobal? 🏝️

For me, the answer completely depends on what you want to experience.

The 360 Tour is ocean adrenaline, boating, and underwater wildlife. The Highland Tour is mist, giant tortoises, landscapes, and a relaxed afternoon at Puerto Chino.

If you’re looking for a slower pace, enjoy landscape photography, or want to combine nature on land before getting underwater to dive, the Highland Tour is a gem you should experience.

And if you arrive in San Cristobal mainly thinking about the ocean, then the 360 Tour fits much better with the kind of adventure you have in mind.
