If you are looking for scuba diving courses in Galapagos and have never dived before, at Aquaventures you can complete your PADI Open Water in San Cristobal in 3 days, using PADI eLearning to advance part of the theory before traveling.
This option is especially practical if you have few days in the islands. You arrive in San Cristobal with a good part of the knowledge already studied and you can make better use of the in-person days to learn, practice, and finally make your first dives in open water.
And, in my case, doing the eLearning before flying was one of the best decisions of the trip.
What is PADI Open Water? 🤿
The PADI Open Water Diver is the entry-level recreational diving certification from PADI. Upon completing it, you can dive up to 18 meters deep, always respecting the limits of your certification, experience, and dive conditions.
During the course you learn the fundamentals you need to start diving: equipment handling, buoyancy, breathing, underwater communication, safety, and different practical skills.
The theoretical part can be advanced through PADI eLearning, to later continue with practical training alongside an instructor.
Why do PADI eLearning before traveling? 📱
If you have few days in Galapagos, making the most of your time is essential.
The truth is that doing the PADI eLearning for the Open Water before flying was the best thing I could have done because I didn’t lose a single hour locked in a classroom reading about buoyancy, physics, or decompression tables when I was already in San Cristobal.
Arriving with the theory approved from the app allowed me to jump straight into the water, focus on enjoying the sensation of breathing under the sea, and make the most of every minute in this paradise without the pressure of having to study at night.
That doesn’t mean the theory disappears from the course. At Aquaventures we continue working on this knowledge during in-person training, but arriving with advanced eLearning makes you make much better use of your time.
What are the 3 days of Open Water at Aquaventures like? 📅
The course combines theory, pool skills, confined water, and final open water dives.
📘 Day 1: Equipment, pool, and theory
The first day we start learning about diving equipment, followed by a pool skills session and theory.
Here you start becoming familiar with the equipment and with the basic techniques you will need to operate underwater.
If you already did the PADI eLearning before traveling, you arrive with an important theoretical base and can make better use of the in-person training time.
🤿 Day 2: Confined water and theory
The second day we perform two confined water dives, where you continue practicing and perfecting the skills needed to dive.
We also continue with the course theory, reinforcing the knowledge you need before moving on to open water.
🌊 Day 3: Open water and final exam
The third day is when one of the most exciting moments arrives: we perform two open water dives up to 18 meters and finish with the final exam.
Here you finally start putting into practice everything learned in the Galapagos ocean.
Learn to dive surrounded by marine life 🦭
Doing a diving course in Galapagos completely changes the experience.
You could learn your first skills in a pool or a lake, but in San Cristobal you have the opportunity to complete your training in one of the most impressive marine ecosystems on the planet.
Instead of doing your first dives in a lifeless pool or lake, you are completing your exercises surrounded by curious sea lions, giant turtles, and rays.
Obviously, during training your priority remains listening to the instructor and correctly mastering each skill. But having all that marine life around makes your first underwater experiences hard to compare with conventional practice.
What will you learn during the course? 🌊
The PADI Open Water is designed so you can start from scratch and develop fundamental diving skills.
During training you will learn:
- How to correctly use diving equipment.
- Buoyancy control.
- Breathing through the regulator.
- Communication through signals.
- Basic safety procedures.
- Techniques to move underwater.
- Basic concepts of dive planning.
- Skills needed to dive up to 18 meters.
Buoyancy is especially important because it helps you control your movements, conserve energy, and maintain a proper position underwater.
And when you are in Galapagos, it also means you can learn to observe marine life without getting unnecessarily close to the animals.
What animals can you find while learning to dive? 🐢
One of the great reasons to do diving courses in Galapagos is the biodiversity you can find during dives.
Depending on the site and ocean conditions, you can encounter:
- Sea lions
- Sea turtles
- Rays
- Sharks
- Schools of fish
- Marine iguanas
- Penguins
- Manta rays
Galapagos is globally recognized for the diversity of its marine life and for encounters with species that make diving a unique experience.
And for someone who is making their first dives, experiencing all this while learning to control their breathing and buoyancy is even more special.
Do I need experience to do the course? ❓
You do not need previous experience to start the PADI Open Water.
The course is designed precisely for people who want to learn to dive from scratch. What matters is being prepared to learn, follow the instructor’s indications, and practice the skills until performing them correctly.
That is why the process is progressively divided between pool, confined water, and open water.
First you learn.
Then you practice.
And finally you apply those skills in the ocean.
Is it worth doing a 3-day diving course in Galapagos? 🧳
