Galapagos Diving Courses for Beginners: Can You Dive Without Experience?

by | Aug 14, 2026

If you’re looking for diving courses in Galapagos but have never dived before, you probably have a pretty obvious question: can you really do it without any experience?

Let me tell you honestly how it went for me: I was absolutely terrified because if you start digging through Reddit or TripAdvisor, everyone makes Galapagos sound like a monster of freezing currents where only veteran divers belong, and the truth is, I didn’t have a single hour of diving experience.

And that fear doesn’t come out of nowhere. Galapagos does have areas with currents, cold water, and changing conditions, so some diving experiences are designed for certified divers with previous experience. In fact, some operators recommend getting your Open Water certification before arriving in the islands.

But that doesn’t mean you can’t have your first diving experience in Galapagos.

Can You Dive in Galapagos Without Experience? 🌊

Yes. The key is choosing an experience that matches your level.

I was about to back out, but after reading several reviews, I saw that people spoke very highly of the Aquaventures team here in San Cristóbal, so I reached out to them to do the Discover Scuba Diving experience.

And brother, what a great decision!

Discover Scuba Diving is specifically designed for people who want to experience diving without having a certification yet. It is not the same as earning a PADI Open Water certification, but it allows you to learn the basics and experience what it feels like to breathe and move underwater with an instructor.

So if you’ve never dived before, this can be a much more logical option than jumping straight into an advanced dive.

Is Diving in Galapagos Difficult for Beginners? 🦭

Let’s be clear: Galapagos can be challenging, but not every dive site has the same conditions.

From the moment I walked into the shop, the vibe was incredibly welcoming and they took away all my stress by explaining that beginners aren’t taken straight to demanding sites like Kicker Rock. Instead, they start with acclimatization in calmer, more protected areas such as Tijeretas Bay or Cerro Brujo.

And for someone arriving with no experience, that progression makes all the difference.

Instead of worrying from the very first minute about currents or maintaining perfect buoyancy, you can first focus on understanding your equipment, breathing through the regulator, and becoming comfortable in the water.

Buoyancy control is especially important in Galapagos, where conditions can make learning more challenging for a new diver.

What Happens During a Discover Scuba Diving Experience? 🤿

At first, the strangest part is simply breathing underwater.

You have to get used to the regulator, your mask, and communicating through hand signals. You also start learning how to control your position in the water.

The first day I almost had a heart attack when I had to take my mask off underwater for the exercise, but the Aquaventures instructors have incredible patience and won’t move you forward until you feel 100% comfortable.

That point is essential for a beginner: you shouldn’t feel like you have anything to prove.

Once you get the hang of breathing through the regulator and controlling your buoyancy, you forget all about the panic.

And that’s when the fun begins.

What Can You See While Diving in Galapagos? 🐢

The reward for getting past that initial fear is huge.

You end up swimming alongside baby sea lions that come right up to your face to play, while giant turtles glide underneath you.

The dive sites around San Cristóbal can offer encounters with sea lions, turtles, rays, reef sharks, and other species, although encounters always depend on the natural conditions of the day.

And that’s exactly what makes Galapagos so special: even a first diving experience can feel completely out of this world.

What Is the Difference Between Discover Scuba Diving and Open Water? 📜

It’s important not to confuse the two.

Discover Scuba Diving: designed for people who want to try diving without certification.

PADI Open Water: a complete course that allows you to earn a recreational diving certification.

If you’re traveling for only a few days and have never dived before, Discovery can help you find out whether you actually enjoy the activity.

If you want to become a certified diver and continue diving after your trip, then you should consider Open Water.

And if you already have that certification, Galapagos opens up many more possibilities.

What If I Already Have Open Water? 🦈

That’s a very different situation.

With an Open Water certification and previous experience, you can access different dive sites depending on their requirements.

For certain dives, operators require a minimum number of dives, while more demanding sites may require higher certifications. This makes sense because Galapagos isn’t a destination where every dive has the same level of difficulty.

Advanced Open Water, for example, is designed for divers who already have Open Water and want to develop skills such as deep diving, navigation, buoyancy, and drift diving.

Liveaboard expeditions to areas such as Wolf and Darwin represent an even more advanced level of diving experience, focusing on specialized diving and encounters with large marine species.

That’s why it doesn’t make sense to compare a first dive with an advanced diving expedition around the archipelago.

Is It Safe to Take Diving Courses in Galapagos? 🛟

Safety should always come first.

If you’ve never dived before, look for a dive center that evaluates your experience level, uses qualified instructors, and adapts the experience to your abilities.

In my case, that’s exactly what allowed me to go from being terrified to actually enjoying it.

I had no diving experience whatsoever and was convinced that Galapagos was simply too difficult for me. But once I received a clear explanation and was able to progress step by step, everything changed.

You don’t need to arrive knowing how to control your buoyancy perfectly or feeling like a professional diver.

You need a process designed for someone who is just starting out.

So, Is Diving in Galapagos Without Experience Worth It? 🌊

After experiencing it myself, my answer is yes.

If you’ve never dived before, I wouldn’t assume that you have to start directly at the most demanding sites in the archipelago. I would first look for an introductory experience such as Discover Scuba Diving, and let the instructors determine which conditions and sites are appropriate for your level.

If you discover that you love it, you can continue with Open Water and eventually move on to more demanding experiences.

I arrived absolutely terrified and ended up discovering a completely different world beneath the surface.

If you’re going without experience, go for Aquaventures with confidence because the safety and personal attention they provide make all the difference.

So yes: you can start diving in Galapagos without experience. Just make sure you start at the right level.
