If you’re planning to go diving in San Cristóbal, you’ve probably heard the same thing over and over: everyone tells you to go straight to Kicker Rock (León Dormido). But there’s another spot that many people overlook—and it can completely change your experience: Punta Pitt.
And yeah, I was in that exact same situation.
What makes diving at Punta Pitt so special? 🌋
Going diving at Punta Pitt was something else… an absolutely incredible experience. At first, I wasn’t sure because almost everyone in San Cristóbal pushes you toward Kicker Rock, but I started checking what people who had actually been there were saying… and decided to switch things up.
Best decision I could’ve made.
From the moment you arrive, the place feels different. It’s not your typical crowded dive site. Everything feels more raw and untouched. The underwater volcanic landscape is impressive, with rock formations that make every dive feel unique.
Marine life at Punta Pitt: what you really see 🐠
One of the strongest highlights of Punta Pitt is the interaction with wildlife.
The best part was that you’re diving with tons of sea lions that come right up to your face to play, super curious and energetic. That kind of interaction is hard to find elsewhere.
On top of that, the visibility was really good, which made it easy to spot huge schools of fish and even a couple of sharks resting on the bottom.
It’s a much more dynamic and natural experience overall.
What about Kicker Rock? Is it still worth it? 🦈
Of course it is. Kicker Rock is one of the most famous dive sites in the Galápagos for a reason:
- Hammerhead sharks
- Iconic rock formations
- Strong currents that attract big marine life
But there’s something important to keep in mind:
👉 It’s the most visited dive site in San Cristóbal.
I almost chose it just because it’s the most popular option, but after doing some research, I realized that you’ll often be sharing the dive with multiple groups.

A detail that makes a difference 🐦
One of the biggest highlights happens outside the water.
After the dive, we were able to see red-footed boobies nesting on the cliffs, which adds a whole extra layer to the experience. It’s one of those moments that makes the entire trip feel worth it.
On top of that, red-footed boobies are one of the most unique bird species in the Galápagos, and they’re not commonly found in many other areas. Seeing them in their natural habitat at Punta Pitt is something truly special and adds a lot of value to the tour beyond just diving.
Who is Punta Pitt best for? 🎯
Punta Pitt is perfect if you:
- Want to avoid crowds
- Are looking for a more authentic experience
- Enjoy close wildlife interactions
- Want something different from the typical spots
And to be clear: if you’re looking for an incredible dive site with fewer people, Punta Pitt is definitely a top choice.

Kicker Rock is iconic, no doubt about it. But Punta Pitt offers something different:

I started with doubts, but ended up completely convinced.
